Taking a Week Off

Hello, lovely readers! I am only posting this week to let you know that, because I am still fighting this cold and am therefore pretty fuzzy-brained right now, I am taking this week off from writing a real blog post. I’ll be back next week! Thanks for your patience.

A Smile (and a Tiny Hiatus)

I’m scrambling to write this On the bus Thursday morning. Life is particularly busy right now, and writing has fallen a bit by the wayside.

I have had ample reasons to smile despite a slightly overwhelming schedule, though. Here are a few of them:

  1. After feeling really burned out at work for a few weeks (to the point where I was brushing up my résumé in case I decided to look elsewhere), I had a great conversation with my department manager on Tuesday that has me feeling much better about where I’m at and where I’m going, and much more appreciated for what I’ve been doing.
  2. I’ve been hanging out with friends a lot lately. There was a long time when we moved that I felt like all my friends were really just my partner’s friends, but we’ve developed our own relationships now and can spend time with mutual friends without feeling like we both need to be there. It’s been so great finally feeling like I’m really connected here in Chicago.
  3. There’s been a lot of medical stuff going on at our house (everyone is going to be fine, don’t worry), which has been pretty overwhelming at times. Generally, though, it’s served to remind us how well cared for we really are. I am incredibly grateful for our support network all over the country.

The next two weeks, my partner and I will be out of town, and I’m going to take those two weeks off from blogging. I’ll have something up again on the 27th!

And We’re Back!

Hello, friends! Some of you may have noticed that Accidental Fudge has been down since at least Thursday morning, when this past week’s post was supposed to go live. After a lot of attempted troubleshooting on my part and a few messages back and forth with the hosting service (which was really where I should have started, it turns out), we’re back in business. Thanks, everyone for your patience while I worked this out! The upshot of all of this is that the site actually appears to be working better and more consistently than it was before, which makes me think I may have messed something up in the setup originally that’s been fixed now. So, yay!

See you all on Thursday! (The post that was supposed to go up this past week can be found here.)

Important Days

The second half of November is full of important days.

I can now count on one hand the number of days until I am legally Alyx.

I’m nervous. I’ve bought a new outfit and started making lists of what I need to bring with me (and what I need to leave at home – evidently, knitting needles are contraband at the Daley Center). I’m a little overwhelmed thinking about the number of agencies I’ll need to alert to the change when it’s done.

But I’m excited. The actual process itself might be a bit of a headache, but it’ll be worthwhile and make for fewer headaches in the future. I can’t wait to have ID with a name that matches my presentation…a name that fits me.

That’s not the only big day in this half of the month, though.

This past Monday marked four years since my partner and I went on our first date. (Next Wednesday marks four years since we figured out that we were both on the same page in terms of wanting to take a stab at this whole romance thing.) It’s been quite the journey, from several months thousands of miles apart to moving in together several states from where we met, through changing identities on both our parts. I have never known anyone who has made me feel so safe and comfortable, and around whom I can be so totally myself. It hasn’t all been sunshine and flowers, but I wouldn’t trade a single moment – all of them, even the hard ones, have been worth it. I will never understand how I got so lucky, but I hope I’m always grateful.

On a rather less sappy note – also coming up at the end of this month is the first birthday of this blog! I wrote my first Accidental Fudge post on November 30, 2013, and have managed to post something every single week for almost a whole year now. (In honor of the impending birthday, I’m giving the site a bit of a makeover; please bear with me, as things will probably change a few times before I’ve really settled on something.) I had no idea when I started whether I’d be able to come up with words every week (and I still rarely know until Wednesday evening what I’m going to be writing about), but I’ve done it anyway, and that’s pretty exciting. It’s the most consistent and dedicated I’ve ever been with any creative effort, and while I may not have gained a cult following, I’m still pretty damn proud of this little corner of the internet that I’ve claimed as mine.

Some Changes to the Blog

Hello, dear readers!

Accidental Fudge has been up and running since November 30: it’s been three whole months! And now that I’ve got three months of weekly posts under my belt, I’ve taken a step back to look at what the purpose of this blog is.

Here’s the thing: when I was thinking about starting a physical transition, I decided pretty firmly that I didn’t want to publicly document my journey. And then the thing with the fudge happened, and it was too funny not to share, and the idea sort of took on a life of its own. But I’ve realized something in the past three months: transition-related stories don’t really happen on a weekly basis, and really, a lot of it is repetitive and downright mundane. Also, while being trans is a big part of my life, it is not all of my life. In fact, it’s not even most of my life: the majority of my time is taken up by other things, like music and knitting and other creative pursuits.

So this is what’s going to happen: I am going to keep posting every Thursday. But this is no longer a blog specifically centered on my transition-related adventures. If a funny transition-related occurrence comes up on its own, fine: it might make it into the blog. But I want this to be a place where I can regularly write about more than just my life as it relates to physical transition. I want to write about the other much more interesting things that I encounter day to day.

I hope you’ll continue to join me.

Introducing Accidental Fudge 2.0!

I had intended to officially launch this page tomorrow, but I’m so excited to share it with all of you that I just couldn’t wait. So without further ado, allow me to introduce www.accidentalfudge.com, the new home of Accidental Fudge!

There are several reasons this is exciting. First of all, there are now more ways for you to follow the blog. If all has gone according to plan, this announcement should be cross-posting to Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr: every post from now on will do the same, so those are all options. In addition, you can subscribe by email via the lovely box to your right (or below the wall of posts, if you’re on a mobile device). I will also be sharing the post from the Facebook page on my personal Facebook, so if that’s where you’ve been getting your updates, never fear! This is still an option.

Another exciting new feature of this new site is the ability to leave comments. I would like this blog to be as much of an interactive experience as possible. Now, with the power of comment-leaving comes responsibility on the part of the readers: I will not tolerate rudeness or hateful speech, and will progressively tighten security if necessary, up to an including removing the comments feature if need be. But I sincerely hope that it never comes to that. Don’t want to leave a public comment, but still have something to say? No problem. There’s a handy little contact form on the About Accidental Fudge page that you can use to send an email straight to my inbox.

This site also leaves me the option of expanding in the future. Whether that means adding resource pages, incorporating more audio or video into the blog, increasing the frequency of blogging, or something else entirely, I’m not sure yet. But I like having my options open.

Thank you to all of you who have been following so far! I hope you’ll continue to stay on this journey with me.

As a side note: if anyone is sharing this page with friends, or adding a bookmark, please make sure to include the “www” in the address. Something went a little screwy when I was setting things up, and if you type in the address without the “www”, it takes you to the front page of the hosting company for the site. I’m working on trying to find a solution. In the meantime, just stick with the full address. Thanks!

Welcome!

Welcome to www.accidentalfudge.com, the new home of the blog Accidental Fudge! I’m in the process of moving things over from Tumblr. In the meantime, updates can still be found at http://accidentalfudge.tumblr.com. Thank you for your patience!
